SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Host Torrey Pines used a 3-0 run in the third period to erase a 6-5 deficit and claimed a 9-7 win over San Diego Section rival La Costa Canyon Friday night.

The win left the Falcons at 13-4 heading into today’s Senior Day game vs. Carlsbad. The Mavericks (13-2, No. 2 in the TopLaxRecruits Western Rankings) had an 11-game win streak snapped.

Torrey Pines Head Coach Jono Zissi said the rivalry between the two teams always leads to an intense game.

“This is the best rivalry in the state, in any sport,” he said “Playing La Costa Canyon, we threw all the records out and to get the kids to focus on the game.

After the Mavs seized a quick 3-0 lead, Torrey Pines scored five unanswered goals, but La Costa Canyon’s Denver signee, JJ Stillstrop, scored his fourth of five goals to give his teams a 6-5 lead early in the second half. Then Torrey Pines too control as Alex Pistorius scored his second goal at 10:40 and Alderick Van Der Heyde scored his second at 7:25. Blake Erlback followed with a goal at 3:58 to put Torrey Pines ahead 8-6.

Stillstrop cut the deficit to 8-7 late in the third period, but the Torrey Pines defense and the goaltending of Naval Academy-bound Makail Fraboni (15 saves) sealed it.

“After trailing 3-0 our squad stepped up; the kids showed a lot of maturity. JJ Stillstrop did well for them; our defense had a hard time stopping him tonight and he’s a quick player.”

Zissi praised his goalie: “Makail Fraboni, who will be heading to the United States Naval Academy, did well for us in the cages tonight has been a rock for us throughout this season.”

LaCosta Canyon 15-2 3 2 2 0 – 7
Torrey Pines 13-4 4 1 2 2 – 9

Torrey Pines: Alderick Van Der Heyde 2 goals; Alex Pistorius 2 goals; Porter Hollen 1 goal; Blake Erlbeck 1 goal; Shayne Grant 1 goal; Evan Egan 1 goal; Bradley Lienhart 1 goal; Michael Mines 1 assist; Makail Fraboni 15 saves

La Costa Canyon: JJ Stillstrop 5 goals, Parker Maclean 1 goal, Andrew Beacham 1 assist, Jack Keen 1 goal and 2 assists, Ryan Winn 13 saves
