Long Island’s three-year reign atop the top flight of the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament will come to an end as Philadelphia 1 and Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 advanced to the championship game of the Onondaga Division after each went 3-0 in pool play in action on Saturday at Yale University.

More than 1,200 of the nation’s top high school players, representing 27 states, are competing in the historic event that dates to 1933.

Philadelphia opened play with a 14-9 win over Connecticut, then edged defending champion Long Island Metro 1 by a 12-10 score, and capped off a perfect day with a 12-7 win over D.C. Metro 1. Philadelphia will meet Massachusetts/Rhode Island in the title game after the New England squad knocked off New Jersey North 1 (14-6), Long Island Metro 2 (14-10) and Baltimore Metro (15-7).

Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 and Philadelphia 1 battle in the championship game of the Onondaga Division begins at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert Award will be presented to the outstanding player in the tournament. The award has been presented since 1994, and former U.S. World Cup players Lauren Aumiller and Katie Chrest are among the past recipients.

It was a great day overall for the Massachusetts/Rhode Island contingent as all four of its squads advanced to the championship game in their respective divisions. Massachusetts/Rhode Island 2 will play Hudson Valley in the Seneca Division final, and in the Mohawk Division, it will be a head-to-head showdown between Massachusetts/Rhode Island 3 and Massacusetts/Rhode Island 4.

Five other division titles will be on the line on Sunday with Philadelphia 5 playing Utah/Idaho in the Cayuga Division, Wisconsin playing North Florida in the Haudenosaunee Division, Orange County (Calif.) playing New Hampshire/Utah 2 in the Iroquois Division, Illinois playing Washington in the Oneida Division, and South Florida playing San Diego in the Tuscarora Bracket.

Maria Mulvihill helped Illinois to a perfect 3-0 record during pool play in the Oneida Division. Illinois will meet Washington in the Oneida Division championship game on Sunday.

The US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament is sponsored by the Heather Leigh Albert Foundation, Yolo Sportswear, First Scout Productions, Gatorade and The Pearl by Guardian, along with US Lacrosse national partners Greenfields, Nationwide, Sports Force Parks and SweatX.

From US Lacrosse

Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 defeated Philly 1, 15-13, to win the top flight, Onondaga, today at the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament at Yale University.

It was the first Massachusetts/Rhode Island team to win the event since current Boston College great Kenzie Kent (Boston College) and Maeve McMahon (Harvard) led Lower New England to the Onondaga title in 2012.

“It’s incredible,” said Massachusetts/Rhode Island coach Beth O’Brien. “I was very fortunate to coach the New England team that won four years ago. I know how great it was then, and we knew we had a great team here. To bring them down and share with them what a great experience it would be for them to be able play well and take something home with them was really exciting. I was really happy for the kids.”

Philadelphia jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the championship game, but neither team could pull away in a game that was tied seven times, the last coming after Philadelphia scored three straight goals to knot the game 11-11 with 12:38 to play. Massachusetts/Rhode Island answered with a three-goal run of its own and ran out the clock for a 15-13 victory.

Madison Ahern led Massachusetts/Rhode Island with three goals and Emma Farnham and Jane Hansen each scored twice. Philly was led by Katie Detwiler with four goals and Olivia Doody scored three times.

Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert was presented to Detwiler as the outstanding player in the event. Detwiler, a junior at Archbishop Carroll High School (Pa.) is committed to play at Loyola (Md.).

In the Seneca Division final, Hudson Valley’s Teagan Lucchese scored the first goal of the game, but Massachusetts/Rhode Island 2 then held the New York squad scoreless for more than 35 minutes and went on to a 12-2 victory. Sophia Dicenso led the victors with four goals and Kylee Bowen had three goals.

In the Oneida Division championship game, Washington’s Mackenzie Chapman scored five goals to lead her team to a 12-10 victory over Illinois. Illinois led 7-6 at the half, but Washington scored the first five goals of the second half, two of them by Chapman, to take control. Katie Brodsky and Maggie Sweeney also had a pair of goals for Washington. Greer Bireley, Sydney Collignon and Maggie Gorman each had two goals for Illinois.

In the Tuscarora Division title game, South Florida scored three goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to move out to a 6-1 lead and went on to beat San Diego 9-5. Tara Shecter and Caitlyn Wurzburger each scored twice for South Florida. San Diego had five different goal scorers.

South Florida downed San Diego 9-5 to win the Tuscarora Division and was one of two teams from the Sunshine State to win division titles. North Florida won the Haudenosaunee Division.

The Mohawk Division featured and all Massachusetts/Rhode Island final. Team 3 beat Team 4 from the region 8-7 on Murphy McDonough’s goal with 1:14 remaining in the game. Caroline Kremer had a team-high three goals while McDonough and Grace Ahonen each scored twice. Massachusetts/Rhode Island 4 was led by Maya Dube, Molly Greer and Caroline Klim with two goals each.

In the Cayuga Division final, Utah/Idaho pulled away from a 5-5 halftime tie to beat Philadelphia 5, 12-8. Lois Garlow scored just 30 seconds into the half to start the rally, and she finished the game with four goals, three of them coming in the second half. Alissa Johnson also had a hat trick for Utah/Idaho. Olivia Brenner led Philadelphia with two goals.

In the Iroquois Division championship, Orange County (Calif.) scored four goals in a span of a little over six minutes in the second half to break a 4-4 tie, and went on to a 9-7 victory over New Hampshire/Vermont 2. Niki Miles had three second half goals for Orange County and Callin Young scored twice. Brigid Casey and Hannah McCarthy each had two goals for New Hampshire/Vermont.

Finally, in the Haudenosaunee Division, North Florida gave the Sunshine State a second division title with a 12-7 victory over Wisconsin. North Florida held Wisconsin scoreless in the opening half and led 9-0 before Wisconsin got on track in the second half. Mason Yonge led North Florida with three goals and Halle Ebling, Kendall Gracie and Cameron Nagao each scored twice. Landry Elliott led Wisconsin with three goals.

Lucy Munro says that coming East to play in the 3rd Annual Prospect Plus Girls’ Lacrosse Camp next month at Holy Trinity HS in Hicksville on Long Island is the ideal opportunity to improve her skills.

The 2021 attack, who will play high school lacrosse at ThunderRidge High in Denver, CO, said the new recruiting rule prohibiting communication with coaches until September of one’s junior year will allow her to focus on improving her game while being instructed by elite college coaches.

Lucy Munro

“I think that’s one of the best parts about the camp; I am excited to see how college coaches teach are and what skills I mainly need to work on,” said Munro. “I think that it (the new rule) does take off some of the pressure off and lets girls enjoy it more instead of stressing so they can decide if they want to go to the college level.”

Prospect Plus (July 10-12) is a teaching camp where college coaches put participants (Grades 7 to 12) through the same drills they run at their schools. Already committed are coaches from Hofstra, Rutgers, Lafayette, Monmouth, Brown, Drexel, CW Post, George Mason at Columbia. The event attracts elite players from the Greater Tri-State region of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey and well beyond.

The camps costs $475. Click here for more information or to register.

Munro learned about Prospect Plus through her father, Jamie Munro, the Founder of 3D Lacrosse.

“He thought it was be a really good camp to see how I matched up against some of the players on Long Island while also getting the best instruction,” she said. “With the new rules, my main focus is to improve my skills as best as I can for junior year.”

What will Munro focus on at Prospect Plus?

“I thunk I need to work most on adjusting to the high school level and learning to play with players that have higher levels of skills,” she said. “I think I really need to work on playing with more explosiveness and I need to work on my dodging.

“I think it will be great to get drills from college coaches that I can take home with me to use.”

“I am really excited. I am happy to get the opportunity.”

Coming East also means playing against players from other regions.

“Yes, it will be interesting to see if the styles are different,” Munro said. “I am nervous, but also curious to see how I match up against them.”

Munro has grown up with lacrosse. Her father was formerly head coach at Denver and her older sister, Emily, will be a freshman player at Oregon and Colin will be a freshman at North Carolina.

“Both my older brother and sister are going to be playing college lacrosse next year,” Lucy Munro said. “I hope to follow in their footsteps. I always grew up being around both of my siblings, but I played soccer until 4th grade. My parents wanted to let me choose instead of starting it 9at a young age).”

What type of player is Munro?

“I think I’m more of a finesse player, but I also have grown up playing box lacrosse and boys’ lacrosse,” she said. “That has helped me a lot.”
