C2C Dallas Breaks Through

The C2C Dallas (Texas) U15 team struggled through pool play, failing to win a game and settling for the No. 14 seed. But the Texans more than made up for it by knocking off third-seeded Team 180 2019 (Colo.), 11-8, in a round-of-16 game before a spirited crowd. The victory sent C2C Dallas into the quarterfinals for the first time ever.

C2C Dallas nearly reached the semifinals. The Texans, behind six goals from Anna Winkeler and three goals and four assists from Jay Browne, stormed back from an 8-3 second-half deficit to take a 10-8 lead against sixth-seeded Integrity 2019 (Md.).

But a yellow card against Catherine Blaylock with 1:54 to play would prove costly. The Marylanders tied the game at 10 and won it when Kathleen Sullivan converted a pretty pass inside from Gabriela Lavin with :28 left.

“I love the fight in this team,” C2C coach Molly Ford, who played at Georgetown, said. “Dallas is starting to get engulfed with lacrosse, with talent and with athletes; we just need to catch up to the players in the East in terms of skills.”

C2C Dallas lost to Integrity during pool play yesterday, 14-4, but turned the tables by winning more draw controls and playing with more confidence, Ford said.

Marathon U13 Semifinal

The Yellow Jackets (N.Y.) and 3d (Colo.) represent two of the better known club programs across country, and their U13 teams met in a semifinal that begs for more matchups as the players get older.

Tied at 6 after regulation, each team scored once in the full six-minute overtime. Top-seeded Yellow Jackets 2021 Blue had its chances throughout the extra sessions, but Caridad Nugent made eight of her 15 saves after regulation ended to keep hope alive for fourth-seeded 3d Select National.

Finally, after 61:25 of lacrosse, Abigail Cotraro scored her fourth goal of the game to deliver 3d the thrilling 8-7 victory.

Upset Bug Both Ways

Fifth-seeded Team 180 2021 (Colo.) saw its 13th-seeded 2020 team eliminated in the U14 first round by fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets 2020 Gold (N.Y.) and later watched its third-seeded 2019 team stunned by 14th-seeded C2C Dallas (Texas) in the U15 first round. Team 180 2021 atoned for the losses by edging Yellow Jackets 2020 Gold, 9-8, in a dramatic U14 quarterfinal.

Samantha Filippi scored four goals in the first half to pace the Jackets, but two apiece from Jessie Bakes and Lauren Rismani helped the Coloradoans forge a 5-5 halftime tie. The spread in the second half never eclipsed one goal, and Katharine Merrifield tied the game at 9 with her second goal of the game for Team 180 2021.

With 32 seconds left, Mandy Brockamp scored unassisted to send Team 180 2021 into the final four with the 10-9 triumph.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – The following are boys’ and girls’ players who shined Tuesday and Wednesday at the inaugural Warrior National Prospect Invite at River City SportsPlex (by Legacy Global).

Joe Peterson, Michael Venezia
Joe Peterson (Monte Vista-CA), Michael Venezia (Massapequa-NY)

Michael Venezia, Massapequa (NY) 2018 Goalie – Venezia has the tools to be a division 1 goalie. The rising junior makes the big saves and has no problems with moving the ball up the field on the clear. One of his goals from the two days at the WarriorNPI was to be more talkative and vocal as a goalie and he displayed that well. His defenders went to battle for him even after knowing him for a short time. Venezia was one of the top picks for the MVP of the WarriorNPI All-Star game.

Cameron MacDonald, St. Andrews College (Ontario, Canada), 2019 Attack/Midfield – The lefty attackman/middie displayed great field vision and lax I.Q. during the two day event. MacDonald hustles on every play as a two-way middie. Love his energy. He makes good decisions when he has the ball in his stick, no rushed passes. MacDonald has some great dodges as well.

Joe Peterson, Monte Vista (CA) 2018, Midfield – Peterson has a tremendous shot on cage. He also has great field vision and lax I.Q. Love his motor and athleticism as a bigger and stronger midfielder. The rising junior from Cali has the game to play at a high division I program.

Zach Snider, St. Josephs Prep (PA) 2018 LSM – Snider is the complete package with the longpole! The way he creates turnovers, gets to the GB’s and moves the ball up the field are going to help him earn his way on a top Division I programs roster. Snider has some vicious checks and doesn’t always rely on the slap check. Look for the Philly native to have a big junior year for St. Joe’s Prep!

Erik Vallow, Lincoln Way-West (II) 2018, FOGO – Vallow has quick hands and won some great face-offs in the WarriorNPI All-Star game. Vallow works at his craft and does a great job of getting the groundball after the win or pushing it out to his wing guys. Keep an eye out for where this kid goes. Vallow is going to be a steal for whoever gets him.

John Armistead, Bellarmine Prep (CA) 2018, Midfield – Armistead is a tough kid. He was consistently making his shots and putting the ball in the net during the two-day event despite needing shoulder surgery later in the week. The Cali rising junior is quick from X and from up top of the restraining line. He isn’t a selfish player.

Matt Hughes, Berks Catholic (PA) 2018, Defense – Hughes is a great athlete. The Pennsylvania native has a great motor up the field on a clear. He has solid footwork and delivers some good checks. He positions himself well with the player he is guarding and doesn’t over commit and get burned. Love his size and has a good Lax I.Q.

Josh Gale, Gonzaga HS (DC) 2018 Goalie – Gale made some great saves in the WarriorNPI All-Star game. The rising junior goalie for Gonzaga shows good footwork around the grease. He is alert and head is on a swivel. Gale does a good job guiding his defenders and will be patient to make sure the clear up field is complete.

Felix Knorr, Howard HS (MD) 2018, FOGO – Knorr displayed quick hands and a quick burst of speed down field after gaining the win off the face! Knorr hustles off the field to allow the offensive middies on. Love the way Knorr doesn’t let a lost faceoff get to him. He doesn’t shy away from going against the other teams best fogo! Knorr should have a big year for coach Crieghton at Howard in 2017 after being finalists in the Maryland state championship game.

Cole Manos, Calverton School (MD) 2019, Attack – Manos is scary good when he gets the ball. His dodges to the cage are perfect and he has a monster shot on cage. He can shot it high to low or uppercut. Manos plays with a bit of a workers man attitude. He gets right to work and wants to move the ball and make sure every possession comes away with a score.

Girls from Warrior NPI who shined:

Julianna Golden, Skylar Minden
Julianna Golden (Allentown-NJ), Skylar Minden (Bishop Gorman-NV)

Skylar Minden, Bishop Gorman (NV) 2018 Attack- Minden played great throughout the two-day event from a more non-traditonal lax region. Making smart decisions with the ball and not being selfish. Loved her hustle and shots on cage.

Julianna Golden, Allentown HS (NJ) 2018, Attack/Midfield – Golden is an athletic kid with a ton of pop in her step. The rising junior is a fun player watch play the game as she dodges her way to the goal and she has a great Lax I.Q.

Celia Luling, Shawnee HS (NJ) 2019, Attack – Celia played very well at the WarriorNPI. I like her determination to get better on every play. She has a ton of potential in the game and should continue to get better throughout her HS career.

Sophia Douglas, Cosby HS (VA) 2018 Goalie – Sophia made some beautiful saves in one of the games on Tuesday to kickoff the WarriorNPI. Being a goalie in this event is a tough task with so many great shooters that were nominated and Douglas wasn’t intimidated. Even when she did let in a goal she would keep her head up and move on.

Jordan Taylor, Massapequa HS (NY) 2018 Attack – Loved the way this kid played both days at the WarriorNPI. Taylor does a great job dodging to the goal and she has a good shot. She can shoot with both hands and is very quick.

Defending national champion FCA defeated Special Forces (Mich.), 16-2, Colorado, 12-2, and the War Eagles (Wis.), 19-2, finishing pool play 3-0 and clinching the top seed via tiebreaker over No. 2 seed Nati Lax Bros (Ohio/Ky.). The Cincinnati-based program, which earned the sportsmanship award at last year’s event as Queen City Chill, also finished unbeaten, but yielded an average of three goals per game.

3d Select National (Colo.), which won the bronze medal a year ago, defeated For the Love of the Game (N.Y.), 7-3, in a key pool-play game to earn the No. 3 seed over the New Yorkers. 3d Select had a chance to finish 3-0, but let a 5-4 lead slip away late in a 6-5 loss to Colorado in an early rivalry game.

From US Lacrosse

Sixth-seeded Colorado used balanced scoring and stellar goalkeeping by Isaac Abramovitz to upset with ease second-seeded Nati Lax Bros (Ohio/Ky.), 16-6, in the US Lacrosse National Championships semifinals at Grand Park Saturday in Westfield, IN.US-lacrosse1-300x150

The Coloradoans avenged a 13-9 defeat to NLB in pool play yesterday, and now they’ll get a chance to continue their revenge tour against top-seeded Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Md.) National in the gold-medal game at 10:30 a.m. today.

FCA handled fourth-seeded For the Love of the Game (N.Y.), 15-2, in much the same manner it cruised past Colorado in pool play, 12-2.

“The schedule we got – we’re battle tested,” Colorado coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We played FCA. We played 3d. We played NLB (all in pool play). I think that helped us today.”

Abramovitz made three stops in the first quarter to keep NLB at bay despite Brenden Malloy winning six of eight faceoffs for NLB. The Cincinnati-based program turned the ball over several times, none more glaring than defenseman Braedon Titus’ ill-timed bounce pass back to goalie Joe Storner. Colorado’s Jake Taylor scooped the loose ball and scored the first of his three goals, along with two assists, just 1:42 into the contest.

NLB, dominant at times during pool play, never seemed to get into a flow offensively despite Malloy’s 19-of-25 performance. Three more Coloradoans scored to make it 4-0, and an NLB timeout did not stem the tide. Travis Hitt scored three times in the first half for an 8-1 lead at the break. Abramovitz played most of the game and finished with 12 saves and three goals against.

“He does a great job leading the team and making saves when we need him to,” O’Brien said.

He’ll need to be on point again tomorrow against an FCA team that ripped off 15 straight goals, including five in a 78-second stretch, after falling behind 2-0 early in the second quarter against FLG. Five FCA players tallied during that outburst, and Daniel Kelly netted three of his four goals in the first half as FCA decisively turned the tables with a 9-2 halftime lead. The defense shut down FLG after Jack Fagen and Louis Perfetto had given the New Yorkers the early advantage.

Bracket Schedule

Third-Place Game: NLB vs. FLG, 9 a.m.
Championship Game: #1 FCA vs. #6 Colorado, 10:30 a.m.

Quarterfinal Summaries

#1 FCA National (Md.) 18, #9 War Eagles (Wis.) 2
Daniel Kelly finished with four goals and one assist and Kyle Gucwa score four goals as the defending champs returned to the semifinals for the second straight year and fifth time in the program’s eight trips to the US Lacrosse National Championships. Kelly twice converted Lance Tillman feeds to start the game, but Nicholas Robson and Willy Hanson answered for the Eagles. Connor Mitchell broke the 2-2 tie late in the first quarter to start FCA’s 16-0 game-ending run.

#2 Nati Lax Bros (Ohio/Ky.) 17, #7 Special Forces (Mich.) 3
Wyatt Fruland had three goals and two assists in the first half as Nati Lax Bros jumped to an 8-1 lead and cruised to the win. Fruland added two more assist in the second half. Dylan Day scored twice for Special Forces.

#4 For the Love of the Game (N.Y.) 10, #5 Utah 5
Ross Tortora scored four of his five goals in the first half and Alex Racanelli made three saves in the stanza to help For the Love of the Game take a 7-0 lead at the break. Five players scored for Utah as it battled in the second half. Mitchell Kozak added two goals and two assists for FLG. Utah goalie Kord Gallego had seven saves in defeat.

#6 Colorado 9, #3 3d Select National 8 (ot)
Josh Yago scored unassisted 2:04 into overtime to lift Colorado to the upset, its second one-goal win over 3d Select National in as many days. Travis Hitt scored three goals for Colorado, and Reed Babcock put his team up, 8-7, with 4:58 to play. But Eli Butler answered with his second of the day for 3d Select, tying the game at 8 with 3:19 to play. 3d’s Charlie Nowell made one of his seven saves near the end of regulation to force overtime.

From US Lacrosse

Strong performances in the US Lacrosse National Championships run in the family for the Kelly family, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Md.) National team attackman Daniel Kelly continued that tradition in the gold medal game at Grant Park today at Westfield, IN.

FCA National wins U15 championship (From US Lacrosse)
FCA National wins U15 championship (From US Lacrosse)

Kelly, the fifth in his family to play in the annual tournament for bragging rights among US Lacrosse’s 300,000-plus youth members and teams, scored three first-half goals to lead top-seeded FCA to a 10-4 win over upstart sixth-seeded Colorado and a second straight national title. Kelly added three assists, and teammate James Cipolla pitched in three goals.

“Everyone’s very unselfish, which made it easy to play together,” Daniel Kelly, who joined Pat, Steve, Tim and Jacob Kelly as family participants, said of a quick adjustment period for this multi-state team. “It’s so much more fun as a team.”

Colorado, constructed with in-state talent, struck first in its first gold-medal appearance, as Jake Taylor fed Travis Hitt 1:59 in. The Coloradoans sought their third straight upset after they edged third-seeded 3d Select National (Colo.) in the quarterfinals, 9-8 in overtime, and toppled second-seeded Nati Lax Bros in the semifinals, 16-6.

But FCA went on a run, as it frequently did during this tournament, with the unselfishness Kelly alluded to. Jack Sawyer twice assisted Kelly, and Cipolla converted feeds from Kelly and Lance Tillman to lift FCA to a 6-1 halftime lead. In fact, nine of FCA assisted on nine of its 10 goals, led by the three from Kelly and three more from Tillman.

“For us it starts with off-ball movement, and Lance and Jack are great feeders from behind,” Kelly said.

Hitt fed Reed Babcock and Taylor scored unassisted to help Colorado close within 7-3 in the third, but FCA salted away the game and its fourth national championship in the eight-year history of the event.

Box Score
FCA National 1+5+2+2=10
Colorado 1+0+2+1=4

FCA Scoring: Daniel Kelly 3g, 3a. James Cipolla 3g. Lance Tillman 1g, 3a. Jack Sawyer 1g, 2a. Kyle Gucwa 1g, 1a. Grant Mitchell 1g.
Colorado Scoring: Travis Hitt 1g, 1a. Jake Taylor 1g, 1a. Reed Babcock 1g. Dylan Wells 1g.

FCA Goalie: Christian Tomei 40 mins., 5 saves, 4 GA.
Colorado Goalies: Isaac Abramovitz 20 mins., 3 saves, 6 GA. Ben Cecil 20 mins., 2 saves, 4 GA.

Wells’ OT Winner Nets NLB Bronze

Xander Wells took a dump off pass in the right alley from driving faceoff victor Brenden Malloy and scored 26 seconds into overtime to give Nati Lax Bros (Ohio/Ky.) the bronze medal with an 8-7 win over For the Love of the Game (N.Y.). Malloy, who won 13 of 17 draws, drove the middle after beating Alex DeRiggi, drew a slide and passed to Wells, who book-ended the game’s scoring with the winner.

The quick end contrasted a lengthy, back-and-forth affair that extended when FLG’s Louis Perfetto scored a man-down goal with two seconds left from the left alley. Perfetto, who scored six goals, came from behind, created space and bounced the equalizer past Joe Storner, who had otherwise rebounded from a tough semifinal outing to make nine saves.

FLG had a 4-3 halftime lead but fell behind 7-4 early in the fourth.

Utah earned the event’s sportsmanship award and an automatic invitation to next year’s US Lacrosse Nationals.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Mater Dei 2018 defender Sydney Payne knew it would be a challenge to leave her cozy home in Southern California to compete in the inaugural Warrior National Prospect Invite last week at the River City SportsPlex.

Standout from the inaugural Warrior National Prospect Invite: (from left) Gabbi Kirsch (Williamston-NJ, SJ Devils), Sydney Payne (Mater Dei-CA, West Coast Starz), Courtney Delone (Edmond North-OK, Oklahoma Endurance)

“My coach didn’t tell me she nominated me so one day I got an e-mail saying, ‘Hey come play,'” said Payne, who was a key starting defender on a Mater Dei team that went 21-0 and won the Southern Section LA/Orange County title. “Personally, it was just a big jump from the West Coast to the East Coast, but it was good to see better skill levels.”

Payne shined as a defender during the 2-day event, which featured over 60 uncommitted girls and nearly 200 players overall. The event, run by Legacy Global, was run concurrent with the Brine National Lacrosse Classic. Players competed in showcase games and received elite instruction from college coaches.

“Since the girls I played with were all new we had to talk more,” said Payne, who plays club for the West Coast Starz. “Once we got comfortable, we began to stop people and get organized.”

What adjustments did Payne have to make?

“We don’t fast break like that,” she said. “It was good to know how to defend them. I had to learn to make better slides and get comfortable with faster slides and knowing who should pick up who. It’s just not something we do often (back home) so this was a big confidence booster.

“When I go back it will feel like we are in slow motion. I know I can do something and execute it without second guessing myself.”

What type of college is Payne looking for: “I am not looking for a specific kind of school,” she said. “My main concern is academics and just want to be challenged.”

Courtney Delone, a 2018 midfielder from Edmond North High in Oklahoma, was clearly challenged. Oklahoma girls’ lacrosse is limited to a few teams – Delone plays for Oklahoma Endurance, which is comprised of players from several high schools.

“We have a couple teams in Tulsa and our Oklahoma Endurance brings all the girls from the Metro area,” said Delone. “We also play some teams from Arkansas.

“This event was super fun. It was hot, but really great to come out here. I learned I have to be quicker. It was a big struggle. The passing and catching wasn’t that hard, but the speed of the game is a little faster than in Oklahoma.”

What did Delone learn about her game?

“Don’t beat yourself down and stay positive,” she said. “Just have fun playing the game. It’s a couple notches more intense here.”

Does Delone see herself playing college lacrosse? “That the dream,” she said. “It would be awesome to play college lacrosse. Academics is the focus, but playing college lacrosse would be a really great bonus.”

Williamstown (N.J.) 2018 midfielder Gabbi Kirsch said her goal was to play Division I lacrosse after standing out in the NPI.

“Obvious,y I want to aim for D1, but I want to make sure the school is strong in academics,” she said. “Academics come first.”

Kirsch, who plays for the South Jersey Devils, said the competition was strong and the coaching helped her learn several key skills.

“There were a lot of people from different regions and it was cool to see what everybody brought to the team,” she said. “I wanted to stand out; this is a showcase and I think I did well overall.

“The coaches were really good. I learned a lot about positioning and working the ball more on offense, as well as the little things that help you out. I really tried to stay focused and drink a lot of water. Our team didn’t do that well in the first game, but we got to know each other more and got a lot better.”

From US Lacrosse

The eighth annual US Lacrosse National Championships wrapped up last Sunday at Grand Park with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Md.) National taking the boys’ division title. FCA won its fourth gold medal with a 10-4 defeat of Colorado.

Earlier in the girls’ division, the Yellow Jackets (N.Y.) won their third straight U15 national championship, 7-4 over Liberty (N.Y.), and took home the gold in the U14 and U13 tournaments as well.

A look at the U15 all-tournament teams and more notes from #USLaxChamps to put a wrap on the summer tournament season.

Colorado Boys, C2C Dallas (Texas) Girls Break Out

The Colorado boys struggled through pool play. They edged rival 3d Select National (Colo.), on which there’s some roster crossover in other tournaments, 6-5 to start the event. Colorado then endured a 12-2 loss to FCA National (Md.) and a 13-9 loss to the Nati Lax Bros (Ohio/Ky.), in a game that NLB controlled for most of the way.

But Colorado made an impressive run as the six seed in the bracket. The Coloradoans denied third-seeded 3d revenge, eliminating 3d, 9-8, on Josh Yago’s goal 2:04 into overtime. They then dismantled second-seeded NLB in the semifinals with surprising ease, 16-6.

“We valued the ball more and played patiently and smartly,” Colorado coach Kevin O’Brien said after the semifinal. “The schedule we got — we were battle tested. I think that helped us today.”

The win sent Colorado into its first final. Colorado previously reached the semifinals in 2014.

On the girls’ side, C2C Dallas likewise made some history in its third appearance in the tournament. C2C Dallas got the 14 seed after falling in pool play to Yellow Jackets 2019 Gold (N.Y.), Top Guns Black (N.Y.) and Integrity 2019 (Md.).

The Texans stunned third seeded Team 180 2019 (Colo.) in the first round, 11-8, to draw a rematch with sixth-seeded Integrity 2019 in the quarterfinals.

“We weren’t working as well together as a team [early on], but we came into the Team 180 game with a lot of enthusiasm, and that made all the difference,” midfielder Jordan Aikman said. “Our team really grew. That was really cool to see us play lacrosse the way we know how to play.”

In the quarterfinal, attacker Anna Winkeler could not be stopped, scoring six goals and handing out an assist for C2C Dallas. Integrity took an 8-3 early in the second half, but the Texans rallied to score seven straight goals for a 10-8 lead in the closing minutes. A yellow card proved costly, however, as Integrity scored three times in the last 1:46 to escape, 11-10.

The loss did not diminish the team’s performance for coach Molly Ford, a Baltimore native.

“I love the fight in this team,” said Ford, who played at Georgetown. “Dallas is starting to get engulfed with lacrosse, with talent and with athletes; we just need to catch up to the players in the East in terms of skills.”

Indeed, C2C Dallas has improved in each of its three appearances under Ford. The Texans lost in the first round in 2014, won their first-round game last year to get to the round of 16, and won their round-of-16 game this year to reach their first quarterfinal.

An Aikman on the C2C Dallas team? Yes, it’s his daughter

NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl championships, supported his daughter, Jordan, on the sidelines among other team parents and family members.

Troy Aikman was gracious throughout the three days at Grand Park, pausing for photos with coaches and families of other teams.

“It’s great to be a father and watch and not get into all the nuances of the game; to just support her and see how she does,” Aikman said after C2C Dallas’ narrow loss to Integrity in the quarterfinals.

Aikman had not been exposed to lacrosse until Jordan began playing in third grade. While his knowledge of the sport has grown, he limits his advice to Jordan and her sister, Ally, regardless of the sport in which they participate.

“There’s three things they can do each and every game,” Aikman said. “Listen to their coach. Give great effort. And be a good sport. If they do those things, I’m pretty happy. And they always do.”
Winning counsel from a true champion.

Next Year’s Site

The US Lacrosse Nationals will feature age divisions for 15U (commonly associated with the high school class of 2020), 14U and 13U. The girls’ tournament is set for July 28-30, 2017, in Richmond, Va. The boys’ tournament site and dates are expected to be confirmed soon. Team registration is expected to open in August.
