PHILADELPHIA – It was just a scrimmage but on Thursday night the Wasatch Lacrosse Club made a monumental triumph for a small Utah-based club program trying to build against top competition on the East Coast.

Wasatch, which is gearing for the Tri-State Nationals this weekend in South Jersey, claimed a 12-11 “win” at
Chestnut Hill College over a Duke’s Lacrosse Club that featured members from several Duke’s Programs teams. There was no scoreboard and most players were not aware of the score; only that Wasatch has made great strides in its fourth year of playing exhibitions with Dukes, considered among the elite club programs in the nation.

The game is part of a goodwill program developed by Duke’s head coach Ebe Helm to help foster growth for the Wasatch program. One Wasatch founder and General Manager is Adam Eddinger, the assistant coach at Chestnut Hill. Wasatch’s other founders and coaches, Danny and Ricky Larkin, played with Eddinger at DeSales University (PA).

“I came into this thinking all East Coast kids were like Gods and that we’d get smoked,” said Wasatch 2017 attackman Lincoln Robbins (Jordan High), who had four goals and three assists Thursday. “They are high school kids, too and they have nerves. It shows the West Coast can compete and that we’re coming.

“It was surreal. You don’t play competition like that in Utah ever. Here, it’s a different ballgame, it’s twice as fun. This gives us some confidence for Tri-State.”

Wasatch arrived Tuesday and visited Villanova, Eastern and DeSales universities to get a taste of East Coast college campuses. On Wednesday Wasatch handled HEADstrong’s new Lehigh Valley club team in another scrimmage.

“It was nice to compare our talent against the talent back here and to get to visit colleges and see how they work was great,” said Sutton Caplan, a 2018 MF/FOGO from Logan. “I think we compare pretty well. It was a good matchup here today and it was pretty even. It proves we have talent, too and we can compete just the same.

Noah Lund, a 2017 attackman from Brighton who had three goals Thursday, was one of a few Wasatch players that came to Philly/NJ year when Wasatch made the finals of the 2016 division (rising seniors) at Tri-State. He said his program has clearly improved.

“It’s an unbelievable experience to come out here twice,” he said. “I feel like we are underrated. The West Coast is here and I feel that we can compete with the East Coast teams, especially going into the tournament.”

Wasatch goalie Kory Hoffman (Fremont, 2017) also believes his team has built on its confidence.

“It’s really a lot of fun to play here,” he said. “Dukes is a really good team. On the West Coast we have this idea of how East Coast players are – and like Lincoln said, it’s like they’re Gods. That’s what you think; and that we’d get slaughtered. It was nice get out here and play and compete with them.”

Said Helm: “It’s wonderful to have our friends from Utah compete and to allow them the experience of playing Eastern competition while also seeing our colleges and culture.”

Danny Larkin said Wasatch held its own at Vail recently where his club competed well in the U-19 Division (with many 2016 players) and held its own against New England power Laxachusetts. He said that this performance, even in a scrimmage, was a key step for his team.

“This is a huge win for our program,” he said. “To compete with and beat a team with the Duke’s name pushes the sport out West and shows we are getting to that level.

“It’s a huge confidence builder for us and I think we built off last year’s performance at Tri-State.”

FT. WASHINGTON, Pa. – ADVNC National 2019 was one of the more impressive teams during the first day of action Saturday at the Passport Alliance/National 175 Liberty Bell Challenge.

They tourney features over 100 high school and youth age teams playing at four locations in the Philly suburbs.ADVNC

ADVNC – comprised of players from the Bay and Saceramento areas – went 3-0 and closed with an impressive 11-3 win over Philly power Duke’s Lacrosse Club. ADVNC also picked up a key 11-10 win over CT Chargers Blue to take the lead in Pool 3.

In the win over Dukes (2-1), Thomas Barnds (Sacred Heart Prep) had three goals and Matthew Fowler (Granite Bay) had two as ADVNC bolted to a 7-1 halftime lead and dominated both possessions and groundballs.

‘We all move the ball really well and dodge and run a very functional offense,” said Barnds. “Everyone can shoot and score.

“East Coast tournaments are tougher; everyone is good and a lot better so we have to step up our play.”

Also scoring for ADVNC were 2020 Shea McColley, Kabe Teague (Granite Bay), Jack Goller (Marin Catholic), Gavin Beadle (Granite Bay), Elliott Hyman (Granite Bay) and Bradley Devito (Granite Bay). Julian Dardano (Oak Ridge) stood out at the face-off X.

“We’re working as a team and moving the ball and seeing the open man,” said Fowler. “And we’re working our tails off to get groundballs.”

What will it take to win the tourney?

“We have to be able to talk on defense and see who is open and slide to them and get the ball back to our offense,” Fowler said.

Fowler said he is interested in playing at a Division I school, but said it’s harder for West Coast players to get noticed.

“I’ve been trying to get (interest from) D1 schools,” said Fowler. “I would like to go to Air Force; if nothing works out I will go play club I’d definitely go to the East Coast and play D1, but it’s hard to get your name out there because it’s so far away.”

Added Barnds: “I have been going to showcases and trying to catch their attention, but it is hard to get your name out there.”

PLYMOUTH MEETING Pa. – Coming from the non-traditional lacrosse region of Reno (NV), 2018 midfielder/LSM Cole Flores said he would not allow himself to be intimidated by the competition Friday at the Passport Alliance/National 175 Liberty Bell Challenge Individual Showcase.

“You can’t be scared or nervous or you can’t play your game. I think I can play with them and I think I’m good enough to go places and represent Reno,” said Flores after faring well in Friday’s 2017-2018 All-Star Game at Plymouth Whitemarsh High.

“Determination is the reason I made the All-Star team. Usually you don’t see Northern Nevada kids out here.”

Flores, who attends Robert McQueen, played with ADVNC 2018 during the Liberty Bell Challenge team tourney. He said he has received interest from Division II and III coaches, but seeks more exposure.

“It’s super fun and super relieving to make the All-Star team with all the hard work I have put in,” Flores said. “The competition is really good.”

Others that shined in the All-Star Game:

Nick Pacheco, 2017 midfielder/FO, Evolve USA, Valor Christian-CO
“You go to some showcases and kids are just doing it for themselves. For the most part all the kids here were easy to work with and they help you. I felt like my training just came together and I felt I did a good job. I like to come out with a little bit of confidence every time; it’s a mindset that I have. I am still open to anything and trying to get looks; that’s why I am doing showcases.”

On his high school season, which ended in a Class 4A state title following an 0-3 start: “I had to watch from the sidelines the first three quarters of the season. Two days before the first game I broke my collarbone. It was kind of a bummer watching, we had a rough start. But it was fun to watch it develop. My little brother (Eric, a 2019 Denver commit) was tearing it up (at FOGO, where Nick was the starter) and on an all-state path so I decided to play D-middie and let him do his thing. Now I feel more comfortable about that position.”

Elliot Fish, 2017 ATT, Evolve USA, Upper Canada High (ONT)

Evole USA 2017 Elliot Fish (left), Duke's L.C. 2018 LSM Matt Lane
Evole USA 2017 Elliot Fish (left), Duke’s L.C. 2018 LSM Matt Lane

“I think overall our ball movement was really good (during the showcase games). We really bonded as a team and that showed through the whole day. It helped that we had camaraderie on offense; and more specifically in the All-Star game we chose to ride a two-man attack in back with one in the middle. I was hanging out above the crease and that allowed for some great movement. We were all righties and we were definitely successful; we could rotate pretty easily and get the ball out pretty quick. I play for Evolve Canada and heard about the Evolve USA team being coached by John Grant Jr. and I thought it would be a great chance to play with some committed players. I am not committed and I thought I could fit in well. The lacrosse is so much better here.”

Matt Lane, 2018 LSM, Duke’s L.C., Lancaster Country Day-PA
“I was really relaxed the whole day; it was a fun event and I finished with six or seven goals. I had a hat trick in a half in one of the games and three in the All-Star Game. I was fortunate enough to know a lot of the kids on my team and the event wasn’t too far away so I could get some sleep. I love the opportunities Dukes give; their programs are all over and coming from my high school (near central PA) I appreciate the exposure I get.”

Others Who Shined during Showcase team games:

Duke’s LC 2019 ATT Jake Waltz, (left) NJ Riot 2019 FO/MF Chris Crapanzano

Jake Waltz, 2019 ATT, Kingsway (NJ), Duke’s LC, All-Star Selection
“My strength today was definitely on groundballs and moving off ball. To compete here you have to do a lot of communication and talking off ball. You have to get to know the other players and see what they like to do.I did a lot of looking to the middle of the field and kept my head up and eyes open. I had some good assists. My goal is to try and improve my outside shot. I get a lot of goals in the crease and by dodging. The d-poles were big and fast and had quick hands. I am looking at D3 school in the Maryland/Carolina are, so it’s not too far away.”

Chris Crapanzano, 2019 FO/MF, NJ Riot, Ridge-NJ, All-Star Selection
“I wanted to step up my game to put my name out there at a higher level. I think I have been playing better lacrosse than I ever have. I am winning more face=-offs and showing I am more than just a FOGO; my offensive skills are improving to the point that I am a stay-on top of player. I learned to never give up on the groundball. Sometimes the ball is in the scrum or the other player may have won the draw initially but you can still get the ball. I am looking at D1 have a few schools, but I am trying to keep my offers open. The opportunities will be there, but I want to make my decision by the end of the summer.”

Will Stahl, 2017 midfielder, Duke’s L.C., Harriton (PA), All-Star Selection

Duke's LC 2017 MF Will Stahl, Team Long Island 2017 G Robert Kruszeski
Duke’s LC 2017 MF Will Stahl, Team Long Island 2017 G Robert Kruszeski

“My goal was to keep hustling and be a team player that is never selfish. I dodged well down the alley, but I have to keep looking up. At a showcase like this you have to learn their names and just try to create chemistry with your teammates and find their tendencies. I am looking for a bigger school and I want to major in Biology.”

Robert Kruszeski, 2017 goalie, Team Long Island, Mattatuck-NY, All-Star Selection

“The goal was to play to my best and hopefully impress the coaches on the sidelines. We had four goalies so getting playing time was tough, so it was great that college coaches and college players were getting us shots between games. It helped get the shots necessary to get in the work. Coaches were working on making sure we communicated and that we made the saves we’re supposed to make and make some that we’re not necessarily supposed to make. I think I made some routine saves and others that were not necessarily routine. I wanted to distinguish myself from the other goalies. I am looking for a good academic school. Obviously you go to college for a good education. I am not going to be playing lacrosse after four years. Academics come first and I love playing lacrosse so hopeflly I can impress a coach that can provide that.”

Luke Vando, 2019 attackman, Twist Lacrosse, Pennsbury-PA

Twist 2019 ATT MF Luke Vando (left), NJ Riot 2017 AT Andrew Aspesi
Twist 2019 ATT MF Luke Vando (left), Twist 2019 DF Andrew Aspesi

“I wanted to get noticed by colleges and play up to my ability. The competition was very good, there were a lot of strong players. I wanted to use my speed and athletic ability and agility and get to open spaces to get shots. I am just looking for a good school where I fit in and get a good experience. You always have options, but it would be good to commit early so you could know the coach and program earlier.”

Andrew Aspesi, 2019 defenseman, Twist Lacrosse, Lower Merion-PA

“The goal was to distance myself from the other players and get some nice groundballs and make good checks. I think I had to talk a lot and learn the names of the players and how they like to play. That helped me learn to always communicate. I don’t want to go to that big of a college; I just want to find one that’s a good fit and has good academics.”

Chris Goranow, 2020 midfielder, CT Chargers, Deerfield Academy-MA

CT Chargers 2020 MF Chris Garanow
CT Chargers 2020 MF Chris Garanow

“I had a goal to see how much I could improve. We all worked well on my team. There was a lot of talent on the field and it shows how hard you have to work to get better. I played with a lot of 2019 players that were more physical and stronger than me. I had to try to outsmart them with cuts off ball and on-ball as well.”
