Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 defeated Philly 1, 15-13, to win the top flight, Onondaga, today at the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament at Yale University.
It was the first Massachusetts/Rhode Island team to win the event since current Boston College great Kenzie Kent (Boston College) and Maeve McMahon (Harvard) led Lower New England to the Onondaga title in 2012.
“It’s incredible,” said Massachusetts/Rhode Island coach Beth O’Brien. “I was very fortunate to coach the New England team that won four years ago. I know how great it was then, and we knew we had a great team here. To bring them down and share with them what a great experience it would be for them to be able play well and take something home with them was really exciting. I was really happy for the kids.”
Philadelphia jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the championship game, but neither team could pull away in a game that was tied seven times, the last coming after Philadelphia scored three straight goals to knot the game 11-11 with 12:38 to play. Massachusetts/Rhode Island answered with a three-goal run of its own and ran out the clock for a 15-13 victory.
Madison Ahern led Massachusetts/Rhode Island with three goals and Emma Farnham and Jane Hansen each scored twice. Philly was led by Katie Detwiler with four goals and Olivia Doody scored three times.
Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert was presented to Detwiler as the outstanding player in the event. Detwiler, a junior at Archbishop Carroll High School (Pa.) is committed to play at Loyola (Md.).
In the Seneca Division final, Hudson Valley’s Teagan Lucchese scored the first goal of the game, but Massachusetts/Rhode Island 2 then held the New York squad scoreless for more than 35 minutes and went on to a 12-2 victory. Sophia Dicenso led the victors with four goals and Kylee Bowen had three goals.
In the Oneida Division championship game, Washington’s Mackenzie Chapman scored five goals to lead her team to a 12-10 victory over Illinois. Illinois led 7-6 at the half, but Washington scored the first five goals of the second half, two of them by Chapman, to take control. Katie Brodsky and Maggie Sweeney also had a pair of goals for Washington. Greer Bireley, Sydney Collignon and Maggie Gorman each had two goals for Illinois.
In the Tuscarora Division title game, South Florida scored three goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to move out to a 6-1 lead and went on to beat San Diego 9-5. Tara Shecter and Caitlyn Wurzburger each scored twice for South Florida. San Diego had five different goal scorers.
South Florida downed San Diego 9-5 to win the Tuscarora Division and was one of two teams from the Sunshine State to win division titles. North Florida won the Haudenosaunee Division.
The Mohawk Division featured and all Massachusetts/Rhode Island final. Team 3 beat Team 4 from the region 8-7 on Murphy McDonough’s goal with 1:14 remaining in the game. Caroline Kremer had a team-high three goals while McDonough and Grace Ahonen each scored twice. Massachusetts/Rhode Island 4 was led by Maya Dube, Molly Greer and Caroline Klim with two goals each.
In the Cayuga Division final, Utah/Idaho pulled away from a 5-5 halftime tie to beat Philadelphia 5, 12-8. Lois Garlow scored just 30 seconds into the half to start the rally, and she finished the game with four goals, three of them coming in the second half. Alissa Johnson also had a hat trick for Utah/Idaho. Olivia Brenner led Philadelphia with two goals.
In the Iroquois Division championship, Orange County (Calif.) scored four goals in a span of a little over six minutes in the second half to break a 4-4 tie, and went on to a 9-7 victory over New Hampshire/Vermont 2. Niki Miles had three second half goals for Orange County and Callin Young scored twice. Brigid Casey and Hannah McCarthy each had two goals for New Hampshire/Vermont.
Finally, in the Haudenosaunee Division, North Florida gave the Sunshine State a second division title with a 12-7 victory over Wisconsin. North Florida held Wisconsin scoreless in the opening half and led 9-0 before Wisconsin got on track in the second half. Mason Yonge led North Florida with three goals and Halle Ebling, Kendall Gracie and Cameron Nagao each scored twice. Landry Elliott led Wisconsin with three goals.
