Long Island’s three-year reign atop the top flight of the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament will come to an end as Philadelphia 1 and Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 advanced to the championship game of the Onondaga Division after each went 3-0 in pool play in action on Saturday at Yale University.

More than 1,200 of the nation’s top high school players, representing 27 states, are competing in the historic event that dates to 1933.

Philadelphia opened play with a 14-9 win over Connecticut, then edged defending champion Long Island Metro 1 by a 12-10 score, and capped off a perfect day with a 12-7 win over D.C. Metro 1. Philadelphia will meet Massachusetts/Rhode Island in the title game after the New England squad knocked off New Jersey North 1 (14-6), Long Island Metro 2 (14-10) and Baltimore Metro (15-7).

Massachusetts/Rhode Island 1 and Philadelphia 1 battle in the championship game of the Onondaga Division begins at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. Following the game, the Heather Leigh Albert Award will be presented to the outstanding player in the tournament. The award has been presented since 1994, and former U.S. World Cup players Lauren Aumiller and Katie Chrest are among the past recipients.

It was a great day overall for the Massachusetts/Rhode Island contingent as all four of its squads advanced to the championship game in their respective divisions. Massachusetts/Rhode Island 2 will play Hudson Valley in the Seneca Division final, and in the Mohawk Division, it will be a head-to-head showdown between Massachusetts/Rhode Island 3 and Massacusetts/Rhode Island 4.

Five other division titles will be on the line on Sunday with Philadelphia 5 playing Utah/Idaho in the Cayuga Division, Wisconsin playing North Florida in the Haudenosaunee Division, Orange County (Calif.) playing New Hampshire/Utah 2 in the Iroquois Division, Illinois playing Washington in the Oneida Division, and South Florida playing San Diego in the Tuscarora Bracket.

Maria Mulvihill helped Illinois to a perfect 3-0 record during pool play in the Oneida Division. Illinois will meet Washington in the Oneida Division championship game on Sunday.

The US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament is sponsored by the Heather Leigh Albert Foundation, Yolo Sportswear, First Scout Productions, Gatorade and The Pearl by Guardian, along with US Lacrosse national partners Greenfields, Nationwide, Sports Force Parks and SweatX.
