Torrey Pines (CA) 2022 uncommitted goalie Lucas Zelaya got a bonus when he planned a trip to Texas the first week in November to see Army play Air Force in a Division I football game at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
He checked the Fall showcase schedule and found that on Nov. 5 Victory Events was hosting the Cowboy Cup Elite Showcase at nearly Plano. What a break!

“I was going to be in Texas to see Army and Air Force because I am applying to both schools,” said Zelaya, whose father went to Arm. “So when we saw the information about the Victory showcase the same weekend I figured I may as well attend it.”
Zelaya, who is interested in all the military schools, was a regular for Torrey Pines this spring in its drive to a third straight California Interscholastic Federation Southern championship. He hopes that he can get some good looks Friday at the Cowboy Cup.
Some spot sremain for the showcase (begins at 5 p.m.) for boys in the Classes of 2022 to 2025 at Carpenter Park. Victory Events also is holding its inaugural Cowboy Cup Elite girls’ showcase Nov. 5 for the Classes of 2022 to 2025 at Carpenter Park. Spots also remain for that event.
“I want to play my heart out,” Zelaya said. “I am going on the field and I’m not leaving anything behind. I am bringing 100 percent effort, and I am going to have a good time doing it.”
“A big part of being a goalie is to really connect with your defense. I want to get into a groove and show off my skills, gaining off a good summer.”
Zelaya – who is looking to study Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering – said his strengths are his resilience, communication and leadership skills.
“I want to say my strengths are my ability to persevere – I don’t give up, if I am down I don’t quit – and my ability to communicate with my defense,” he said. “I always get to know my defenders on a personal level and I show leadership through encouragement and team spirit.
“I am a big team and I love that team aspect. I like to work with defense as a unit. Also, I am consistent and I can clear.”
Zelaya hopes to continue momentum from a strong summer.
“It was a phenomenal summer and I played some of my best lacrosse this summer,” he said. “My clearing and passing got a lot better and my consistency as a whole got better. My footwork got better and I gained strength. I have been going to the gym and working on my cardio.”
