From US Lacrosse
Austin Colvin of Novato, California has been selected as the national winner of the 2014 US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award, given in recognition of the boy’s high school player who best exemplifies the idea of going ‘above and beyond’ in service to his team, school and community.
On the field, Colvin scored 66 goals for Marin Catholic High School as a senior in 2014, and was selected as both the MVP of his team as well as a first team all-league attackman. His off-the-field accomplishments included serving in a number of academic leadership positions and providing over 200 hours of service as a volunteer at the Tamalpais Senior Convalescent Center. As a Dean’s List student and National Honor Society member, Colvin received a letter of appointment to the United States Military Academy.
Colvin’s high school coach, Will McGettigan, provided these words of support for his candidacy:
“Austin is the type of player every coach dreams of – he’s talented, unselfish, ambitious and loyal,” McGettigan said. “Austin was not only our offensive leader, but also our overall team leader. When we needed a big play or someone to change the pace of practice or a game, Austin was our guy.”
Colvin, representing the West Region, was one of four regional Bob Scott Award winners considered as a finalist for the national award. The other regional winners were:
East Region: Cole Weber (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood High School)
North Region: Drew Little (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany High School)
South Region: David DiPiazza (Madisonville, La./Mandeville High School)
In total, 56 Bob Scott Award honorees were selected in 2014, representing their local geographic areas.
All nominees for the Bob Scott Award must be seniors of outstanding character who are in good academic standing and who demonstrate good sportsmanship and safe play on the field. Candidates must exemplify the fundamentals of lacrosse, work hard to improve their game and serve as a leader both on and off the field. Letters of recommendation are required in support of the nomination application.
The Bob Scott Award is named after the legendary coach at Johns Hopkins University who guided the Blue Jays to seven national championships during his 20-year tenure. Scott was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1977.
