Staples (CT) 2017 midfielder Tanner Wood has great respect for Canadian lacrosse players.

“When I went down to try out for 3d Blue Chip I saw Canadians there and it was like nothing I have seen before,” he said. “They play strong defense, their passing is on point from playing box and their IQ is a lot higher than most.”Stars and Stripes

Wood will get a first-hand look at Canada’s best Sunday when he plays with Stars and Stripes in the 2017 game at 9 a.m. at Union College (N.Y.) for the opener of the inaugural High School Challenge Cup vs. Team Maple Leafs. The event continues with a 2016 game at 11 a.m. and a 2015 game at 1 a.m.

“It’s pretty cool what we’re doing,” said Wood, who plays for the CT Chargers. “It’s the first time I have heard of our age group playing for our country and it’s cool exposure for us.

“We’re not used to playing against how the Canadians play and we’ll have to adjust. It will be a great challenge.”

Wood is excited to play with some familiar faces and others he does not know.Stars and Stripes 2

“I have two other friends coming from Darien (CT) and we are pretty excited to be playing with others we aren’t used to playing with,” he said. “Usually we are going against them, but we’ll see how they take a bunch of kids that never played with each other and get them to play together.”

Decatur Pritchard, a 2015 defenseman from Patriot High (VA) and Cavaliers Lacrosse, also is looking forward to the challenge. He was named to the team after sending in his highlight film; most were picked through two tryouts.

“It’s a completely unique experience,” he said. “Making the team was one of the better moments of my lacrosse career, especially since I saw the amazing players on the roster.”Stars and Stripes 3

Pritchard, who is looking for a college home, said he figures to benefit from the experience in many ways.

“First off, I get to play top expectation and I get to play in a great event with great guys. It’s a great event for me a year away from college. Plys, I am getting to represent our country against the Canadians, so we have big expectations. We just want to win.”

The event is sponsored by National 175. Click here for rosters for all three teams on both sides of the border.
