The Pinnacle girls’ lacrosse recently claimed its fourth straight Arizona state championship with a 9-8 victory over Chaparral.
The Pioneers finished 18-2 and avenged a 20-10 loss to Chappael (17-3) on April 17. Pinnacle also avenged an early-season loss to Xavier College Prep, with a 22-11 semifinals victory. After that loss the Pioneers won their last seven games.
“Teamwork was the key,” said sophomore Elly Clemens. “We grew as a team throughout the year, and used the losses as motivation. They made us closer, and showed we needed to work harder.”
Senior Nicole Cosmany agreed: “It (the losses) were a wakeup call. They gave the team a chance to grow, and a goal for all of them to teach for, the team used each other’s energy and bonded.”
Clemens said the game-plan for the title game was to feed off each other’s energy.
“We wanted to have a lot of energy from the previous loss, faceguard their important players, make good decisions, and be smart players,” she said.
