St. Ignatius Prep (CA) capped a strong 3-day stretch Saturday by defeating Coronado (CA), 14-12, in Pasadena’s St Francis High School.
The Wildcats (5-0), No. 8 in the TopLaxRecruits Western Rankings, also toppled Texas power Highland Park, 9-6, on Thursday at home and downed San Diego power and No. 6 Torrey Pines, 9-4, at Pasadena on Friday.HS Roundup

The victory Friday was perhaps the most impressive of the three as freshman goalie Mac Gates posted six saves and Peter Alimam (Fairfield), Patrick Brosnan and Tommy Fleming each had two goals and an assist. Finn Berry and Bryn Evans each added a goal and an assist and Ben Knauss scored once. Berry also won 4 of 6 face-offs and Fleming had five groundballs.

In the victory over Highland Park, Brosnan had three goals and Knauss had two goals and two assists and Alimam had two goals and an assist. Gates stopped eight shots.

St. Ignatius Prep coach Chris Packard, whose 2013 team was nationally ranked, said this squad has less superstars but is jelling quickly.

“It’s been a real pleasure to coach them; they are a really balanced team and we have a lot of senior leaders,” he said. “We don’t have a bunch of superstars; there are more blue-collar, hard-working guys.

“The defense is playing exceptionally well.”

Packard cited the play of Gates, who just cracked the starting lineup, as well as sophomore defenseman Hall Peters (Virginia); and senior defenseman Steven MacLeod (Georgetown); and midfielder Finn Berry (Furman). Nick Stinn has been a standout at LSM and senior midfielder Matt Klein has been a groundball machine.

The Wildcats will get the stiffest challenges possible in early April when they play at two teams ranked in the Epoch Lacrosse North America rankings: Landon School (MD) and Gonzaga College High (D.C.), on April 7 and Apri 9, respectively.

Lambert (GA) 14, Northview (GA) 5

The Longhorns, No. 3 in the South, improved to 6-0 and dealt the Titans (5-1) their first defeat.

Eric Overbay scored four goals and Trey Arnold (Robert Morris), Jake Stanford (Delaware), Matt O’Rourk (Air Force) and Conrad McEvoy each scored a pair. Garret Gomez (Furman) posted 13 saves.
